The Grapevine: Books, Hairstyles, Barbie and More

By Rosalyn Queen on August 10, 2023 from The Grapevine

Today’s column is a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

This week I have been able to return to reading.  Jeannie McNabb sent me a few books and I have been reading two of them. I do not usually do this, but one book is Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.  This is sort of an autobiography by Matthew Perry. And it talks about his trip with drugs.  It is a very heartfelt story and I sometimes have that deep down feeling from my own experiences and then I have to put the book down and go to my other one.

The second book is Future FLOTUS?  This book is by Amy Denson and she happens to be a local author.  I am not halfway through it but I find it most interesting.

The other thing I am concerned about is the popular hairstyle that most women are wearing these days. I watch a lot of television and I notice that most of the female broadcasters have blond hair and sort of look like Barbie.  I have noticed that lately hairstyles are much longer which is fine, but the style seems to dictate that the hair is pulled forward over each shoulder.  This may sound ridiculous but each time I see this style I think of a cocker spaniel dog.  My son Mike had one when he was in college and those long hairy ears remind me of today’s style.  I truly hope that this style changes and the long hair will be styled in a more beautiful style.

One of the most popular movies now showing is Barbie.  I have so many memories of Barbie.  With two young daughters our house was full of Barbies and all of her accompaniments.  I made hundreds of outfits and even sold them at Christmas.  I want to remind you that our favorite knit designer, Nicky Epstein has three books out with Barbie outfits to knit or crochet.  Nice project for the granddaughters for Christmas.

My last little bit of this and that, of course, refers to my garden.  My deck is just covered with plants.  With the hot weather it does require me to do a bit of watering but it is worth it to see my plants flourishing.

The Progressive Women’s Association in Clarksburg will be hosting a luncheon to celebrate Carrie Davis, National First Runner Up for Ms. Amazing. Carrie brought home the title from Chicago, and we are certainly proud of her.

Summer is almost over, and school will soon be starting.  Plan a get a way weekend with the family to end the summer.

Stay cool, stay healthy and until next week” Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
