A Harrison County School that faced an emergency closure in July of 2023 is on the auction block and will go to the highest bidder.
Kaufman Realty & Auctions’ Web site lists the former Norwood Elementary School as being on the auction block. Bidding on the structure has begun and will end Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
For those wishing to purchase the structure, you can do so only by online bidding. An open house for the property will take place on Monday, Feb. 3 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the former school situated at 208 Kidd Avenue in Stonewood.
It was on July 23, 2023, that Harrison County Superintendent of Schools Dora Stutler made the announcement after receiving troubling news on the building just prior to a Board of Education meeting. The Board of Education received a report that an engineering firm had found major structural issues. Stutler said the building was not safe for students and that led to the permanent closure.
The building closed one year short of its 100th-year anniversary. Recently, the Harrison County Board of Education auctioned the former Victory High School, Adamston Elementary School building, which is now home to a charter school.
The Noorwood building has sat vacant since its closure. The majority of the students headed to Nutter Fort Elementary, while others ended up going to Simpson Elementary.
The site consists of 1.23 acres with the three-story building itself covering 25,112 square feet. Other features include an attached gymnasium (with stage and lunchroom), an attached single-story building, playground, and an outdoor basketball court.
Utilities to the site include city water and sewer. The heating is done through gas hot water boilers.
