By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 20, 2024
Tom Mellott is among 2024 inductees for the BHS Alumni & Friends Foundation Hall of Fame and will be honored Nov. 8 at the BHS football game, as well as Nov. 9 at the foundation's annual banquet at The O by Oliverio's. Tickets are available at $50 each HERE.
Tom was born in Bellaire, Ohio and attended Bellaire High School graduating in 1969. He continued his education by enrolling at Ohio University while working for the motel chain, Holiday Inn, as a general manager. In 1973 Tom’s job brought him to Bridgeport, West Virginia.
When his daughter reached school age, Tom began volunteering his time at Simpson Elementary and then following her to junior high which was the process of becoming a middle school. He continued volunteering at Bridgeport Middle creating a parent volunteer program and taking over as president of all sports boosters.
Tom then moved on to the Bridgeport High School with his daughter and spent three years as president of BHS all sports boosters. After his daughter’s graduation from BHS, Tom stayed on as part of the high school program as well as the middle school booster program. He spent the last 32 promoting both schools as part of both booster organizations.
Over the years he has spent countless hours helping raise money for uniforms, special projects, scholarships, school improvements, and anything that students need. He continues to play music at all middle school dances, cooking at high school games, taking athletes photos on and off field for their yearbooks and doing whatever is necessary for both school’s success.
Tom has a true passion for our youth and their successes, as it shows across the community. From hanging signs around school facilities to orchestrating fundraisers for academic and athletic programs, you can find him just about anywhere. He is grateful to continue his work with Bridgeport schools, and thanks all of those who have supported him throughout his journey.
Joining Tom Mellott in this year's hall of fame are Scott Simons, Julie Tomes, Beverly "Cookie" Compton, and the late William A. Moore. Read about Simons HERE and Tomes HERE. The other bios will be running at noon Sundays in the coming weeks.
