Bridgeport's Luke Brovey Among First Fairmont State Grads Heading to WVSOM on "POMP" Program

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 11, 2025

In October 2023, Fairmont State University partnered with the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) to launch the Pre-Osteopathic Medicine Program, or POMP. The program guarantees Fairmont State students, who meet all program requirements, acceptance into WVSOM.

Recently, five Fairmont State graduates — Bridgette Altizer (Falling Springs, WV), Chance Berg (Petersburg, WV), Luke Brovey (Bridgeport, WV), Skye Friel (Petersburg, WV) and Patrick Merrill (Nutter Fort, WV) — became the first to be accepted into the POMP. They will advance to WVSOM to pursue their Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degrees.

Brovey is a 2021 Bridgeport High School graduate and will Graduate from Fairmont State in the Spring of 2025 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He was awarded Finalist for the Charles J. McClain Presidential Scholarship as well.. Besides being a full-time student, Brovey works at United Hospital Center as a scribe in the emergency department and volunteers at Stars and Strides Therapeutic Equine Center.

“Fairmont State’s commitment to being a Great Place to Learn extends beyond graduation,” said President Mike Davis. “This partnership with WVSOM creates new opportunities for our students and builds a skilled workforce of osteopathic doctors who will contribute to a healthier, stronger West Virginia.”

The POMP’s mission at WVSOM is to advance osteopathic medicine by nurturing aspiring osteopathic physicians, increasing the pool of strong applicants and fostering professional networks. The program provides Fairmont State students with opportunities for shadowing, interactions with medical professionals and expanded knowledge in osteopathic medicine.

“We were thrilled to see five of our students accepted in the POMP’s inaugural year,” said Interim Dean of the College of Science and Technology Dr. Deb Hemler. “This milestone reflects our students’ dedication and the exceptional guidance from our advisors and faculty, who are committed to preparing future medical professionals. By securing their place in medical school, these students can now focus on maintaining their academic performance without the pressure of additional applications.”
