Off the Shelf: For Lovers of Nature, Bridgeport Library has Books to Capture its Mystery and its Beauty

By Savanna Draper on May 25, 2022

Whether you are a nature enthusiast or you are interested in immersing yourself in nature from inside your home, the library has books for you. These books capture the beauty and mysteriousness of nature and the world around us while exposing us to facts about our environment we might not know. Since summer is right around the corner, it’s a great time to grab one of these books and head to the great outdoors.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed is an autobiography detailing Strayed’s journey as she makes the impulsive decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State alone. Along her journey she encounters wild animals, changing seasons, and most of all, the beauty of nature.

The Overstory by Richard Powers is a work of fiction that unveils fables that range from antebellum New York to the late twentieth-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. It explores the conflict between humans and nonhumans and how these two worlds are interconnected.

The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann is a nonfiction book that seeks to solve the mystery of what happened to the British explorer Percy Fawcett and his quest for the Lost City of Z, an ancient civilization. Follow along with this spellbinding account of events as Grann attempts to unravel this mystery.

World of Wonders: In Praise of Whale Sharks, Fireflies, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil is a collection of essays about the natural world and the way its inhabitants can teach, support, and inspire us. Nezhukumatathil has created this work through the lens of all the places she’s called home such as a Kansas mental institution where her mother was a doctor, the mountains of Arizona, chilly New York, and Ohio, just to name a few.

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson is a comedic work of nonfiction. In this book, Bryson shares his experiences of hiking the Appalachian Trail with his childhood friend as they encounter a blizzard, getting lost, and so much more along the way.

All the books mentioned above can be checked out at the library. Stop by and settle down with one of these nature-centric reads today!
