Off the Shelf: Summer Reading Program a 2024 Hit

By Savanna Draper on July 31, 2024

The Bridgeport Public Library would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who participated in our 2024 Summer Reading Program “Adventure Begins at Your Library!” We had an excellent program this year with 279 registrants. 146 of those registrants were children, 23 were teens, and 110 were adults. Our Summer Reading Program was so successful because of each and every one of you!

Our Summer Reading Program began on June 17 and wrapped up on July 19. During that time, the library saw 13,067 patrons come through our doors—that’s over 200 patron visits per day! That’s not all. Throughout the duration of the program, our staff was able to offer 64 programs for children, 71 programs for teens, and 75 programs for adults. All programs were very well attended, and we are so happy our patrons found something to interest them!

Our participants put in a lot of hard work too! Collectively, over the course of the program, they read 127,549 minutes. That’s 2,125 hours! They also submitted 300 book reviews about books they read during the program and earned 2,628 badges from activities like attending programs, logging minutes read, submitting a canvas for our Tiny Art Show, and participating in our Community Scavenger Hunt. Great job everyone!

We would also like to take the time to thank the sponsors of our Community Scavenger Hunt: Almost Heaven Coffee & Desserts, Artworks, Benedum Civic Center, Bridgeport Farmers Market, Bridgeport Running, Great Harvest Bakery, Insight Astronomy, Market on Main, Mountain Mama Magick, Stone Tower Brews, Stonewall Coffee, Sunmoon Apparel, The Gryphon’s Nest, and Winnie’s.

Of course, participating in our Summer Reading Program gives you the opportunity to win some pretty cool prizes. This year, we were fortunate enough to give away 33 prizes including a drone, a telescope, a luggage set, and several other fun things! The more you participate in the program, the better your chance is to win a prize!

Although this year’s Summer Reading Program has come to an end, there are still many things happening at the library throughout the year. We offer tons of programs for children, teens, families, and adults each week, we offer a plethora of free services, and there’s never a shortage of books to read. I hope that we continue to see the same level of dedicated library usage throughout the year.
