Harrison County 4-H/ FFA Livestock Show & Sale Planned for Sept. 23 at Summit Park

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 11, 2023

SUBMITTED STORY

Make plans to join Harrison County 4-H and Future Farmers of America members on Sept. 23 at the upper pavilion at Summit Park as they show and sell their market animal projects.

The participants will exhibit market steers, market hogs, market lambs, market goats, market broilers, and market rabbits before competing in showmanship in their respective species. Animals are placed on conformation, while in showmanship, the judge will be selecting youth who do the best job displaying their animal to the judge. Following species showmanship, winning youth will show in the Round Robin Showmanship to determine the top showman for the senior and junior divisions.

Following the show, youth will participate in a livestock skillathon where their knowledge will be put to the test. 4-H and FFA members will need to identify various breeds of livestock, plants, and will be tested on their quality assurance knowledge. The skillathon is just one portion of the premier exhibitor program, which also takes showmanship and animal placing into account.

Later that evening, youth will offer their market animal projects up for sale. Youth involved in these projects have hands-on experience and acquire an understanding of market animal production. These youth learn entrepreneurial skills and become advocates of animal agriculture.

Participants would like to thank the buyers and sponsors from the 2022 Livestock Show and Sale: Antero Resources Corporation, Ben Queen, Cooper Law Offices, Energy Transport, Farm Credit of the Virginias, Foster Feed, Friend-Sheep Suffolks & Club Lambs, Harrison County Bank, Harrison County Commission, Harrison County Farm Bureau, Harry Green Chevrolet/Nissan, John Watson, Kaufman Realty & Auction Service, Mike Romano, Mike's Pig Roasting & Catering, MPLX, MPLX-Sherwood Facility, Ryan Davis, S & D Farm, Shamblin Brothers Farm Supply, The BilMar at Kemper Run, Tractor Supply, Tyler's Landscaping, Young & Stout.

Buyers are welcome to join us prior to the sale for a Buyer/exhibitor dinner at 5 p.m., and the auction set to begin at 6 p.m. Please plan to join us and support youth in agriculture.
