BHS Offers Free Program to Improve Focus, Study and Test Taking Skills; Registration Required

By Trina Runner on January 21, 2020

After wrapping up the first semester a Bridgeport High School, students are getting a fresh start with all new classes and the opportunity to learn strategies that can help them improve their morale and their grades.

On January 28, the Results Driven Priorities (RDP) Team at BHS will be hosting “Grey Matter(s)” in the BHS library from 5:30-7:30p.m.  The event is free of charge but pre-registration is required. Two speakers will launch the event with their own success stories and how they overcame challenges along the way.

Bridgeport High School’s Luke Nesler, who owns Impakt Media will inspire students with his interactive presentation, followed by Jeffrey Lovell, a member of Bill Elliott’s Racing Team. Lovell’s Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder could have been a roadblock to success, but he used it to become more creative and hardworking, ultimately landing him on Bill Elliott’s team.

The RDP team has assessed areas of concern for students and collaborated to create learning stations for the event that are geared toward some of the most common challenges students face in the classroom.

“A lot of students seem to have trouble getting motivated and staying organized as they do their homework or prepare for tests,” said RDP member and BHS teacher Margie Bonenberger. “That can have a long-term effect on their self-esteem. We want to help them to be confident as they enter into their next semester and, eventually, into college or the work force.”

Speakers will begin at 5:30p.m., followed by interactive station rotations for parents and teens. Stations will help students determine their learning styles, learn how to stay motivated and keep their self-esteem high, how to get organized and apply study skills, how to overcome procrastination and learn time management and learn important test prep strategies to make the rest of the year successful academically.

“This event will give students and parents an opportunity to discover new learning strategies that can help them with their school work, time management, and more,” said RDP team member and BHS teacher Courtney Rankin.  “Our team is dedicated to working with students to continually offer strategies to help them improve their grades and overcome challenges.”

Following the “Grey Matter(s) event, weekly sessions will be offered during homerooms in order to offer personalized techniques that will help students with focus and motivation. Topics will be developed based on the needs of those participating and resources will be available for assistance in specific areas of concern.

Free pizza and drinks will be available and families of BHS students can register by sending emails to trinarunner@gmail.com.  Registration must be made prior to January 24.
