Bridgeport High Celebrates 31 Students for Earning Exceptional Microsoft Office Specialist Achievements

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on February 11, 2025

Bridgeport High School proudly announces that 31 students earned Microsoft Office Specialist certifications during the Fall 2024 semester. In total, students in the Business Computer Applications classes achieved an impressive 141 certifications (List of students and their certification achievements will be provided at the end of this write up).

Students enrolled in the Business Computer Applications course dedicated themselves to mastering essential skills in Microsoft Office programs—Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel. Through a combination of simulation labs, live applications, and practice tests, students prepared rigorously for each certification exam. Over the semester, they had the opportunity to earn certifications through Certiport in various tracks, including Word (2019), Word (365 apps), PowerPoint (2019), PowerPoint (365 Apps), Outlook (2019), and Excel (2019). Advanced students who excelled in these tracks were further challenged to pursue Word Expert (2019) and Excel Expert (2019) certifications. These timed exams add an extra layer of difficulty, testing both knowledge and efficiency. Certiport’s Microsoft Office Specialist program, backed by Microsoft, is a globally recognized certification that validates students' skills and prepares them for real-world applications.

More than half of the certified students (19 in total) achieved at least three certifications, earning them the prestigious Microsoft Office Specialist—Associate title. These accomplished students are: Jaren Butts, Anabell Bongiorno, Trey Callahan, Quinten Collier, Luke Harding, Ethan Kelley, Anthony Liberati, Matthew Lunsford, Sawyer McVeay, Kadance Moore, Markus Mugge, Elijah Pennington, Jack Perperas, Dominic SanJulian, Preston Sawyer, Grant Shriver, Trey Spatafore, Braedyn Yates, and Sara Watts.

Adding to these achievements, eight Bridgeport High School students ranked among the top 10 scorers in West Virginia. As part of the Fall Qualifier, students aged 13 to 22 participated by submitting qualified, passing scores in one of six competition tracks: Microsoft Office Specialist Word, Excel®, or PowerPoint®. Six students ranked in the top 10 for Microsoft Office PowerPoint (365 app version): Grant Shriver, Alexander Naternicola, Jaren Butts, Markus Mugge, Anthony Liberati, and An Bongiorno. Three students earned top 10 spots for PowerPoint 2019: Markus Mugge, Trey Callahan, and Grant Shriver. Two students, Markus Mugge and Dominic SanJulian, ranked in the top 10 for Word (365 app version).

“We have seen incredible results from the Microsoft Office Specialist program as our students develop and validate essential workforce skills,” said Mrs. Daugherty, Business Education teacher at Bridgeport High School. “The Microsoft Office Specialist U.S. National Championship motivates our students to strive for excellence. We are especially proud of Grant and our other top 10 placement winners, who have proven to be among the best in the state. We know Grant will make us proud at the U.S. National Championship in June.”

First-place students will represent West Virginia at the 2025 Microsoft Office Specialist U.S. National Championship in Dallas, Texas. At this prestigious event, they will compete in their respective tracks, connect with top students from across the nation, and celebrate their accomplishments. The winners of each track will advance to represent the United States at the 2025 Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship in Orlando, Florida.
