Time Travel: Virginia Avenue, Main Intersection in 1987 and Joe DiMaggio in 1979 Italian Festival Parade

By Dick Duez on August 04, 2024 from History Blog

There is a lot to digest in this photo at the intersection of Main Street and Virginia Avenue. The first is that the building just demolished in this 1987 photo house an UnoMart and sold gas. The cas price - 92 cents per gallon. There is no retaining wall in place as it was still decades away on the right side of the photo. And the two billboards show, on top, an advertisement for the Wendy's Super Bar, which no longer exists, and the bottom billboard is an advertisement of holiday greetings from Bridgeport Bank.
The Yankee Clipper, Joe DiMaggio, served as the parade marshall in the 1979 West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival Parade. He is shown here on Pike Street signing an autograph as he passes the former Clarksburg City Hall building, which also was home to the city's police department. The building has since been demolished with a new city building a block away on Main Street.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This ongoing photo feature of pictures from Bridgeport and throughout the Mountain State is part of local historian Richard "Dick" Duez's collection, the unofficial historian of Bridgeport, would appreciate any scanned photos emailed to him for use here or to include in his ongoing efforts to preserve local history. You can email photos, or let him know how to acquire copies of photos you may have in your possession, to Duez at dickdo@citynet.net
