Bridgeport Police Offer Warning to Residents of Local Scam Involving Amazon Prime and Use of Gift Cards

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on March 01, 2021

FROM THE BRIDGEPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT

Residents are being reminded to not give personal information to anyone you don’t know or can not verify.

Residents have been receiving automated phone calls from scammers portraying themselves as Amazon representatives.  When you make any selection during the automated message someone will come on the line. At this point they tell you there is a problem with your Amazon Prime account, they will then state they are going to put a refund on your card.  Then send you a confirmation stating a large amount of money has been deposited incorrectly into your account.  They then tell you the only way to correct their error is for you to go to Walgreens, Walmart or Dollar General and obtain gift cards in certain amounts.

After purchasing the cards they ask you for the card numbers.  After you give the card numbers, the scammers immediately remove the money from the cards.  They will keep you on the phone the entire time.  Once they get the card numbers they state an Amazon employee will come to your house with paperwork involving this transaction.

Amazon stated they will not contact anyone by phone for any reason.  If you do believe there is a problem with your Amazon account you should contact Amazon directly.
