City Construction Numbers Surpass $10 Million Mark Despite Several Massive Projects Pushed into 2023

By Jeff Toquinto on May 12, 2022

The year has not reached the halfway point and the City of Bridgeport is already past $10 million in new construction projects permitted for the year.

At Monday’s Bridgeport City Council meeting, Community Development Director Andrea Kerr provided an update of her department’s activities. And the activities, particularly on the construction front, appear to be going well.

Although the numbers may be down a bit compared to some recent years in the city, it is still on pass to hit a high number. As of the report Monday, the city had done $14,286,027 in total construction.

The number, said Kerr, was expected to be higher. However, economic issues have stalled several expected projects.

“We had three or four large projects that were supposed to happen this year, but economic problems have resulted in them moving back to 2023,” Kerr told Council.

Last year, Bridgeport had $48,667,367 in construction and in 2020, the first year of COVID, they were at $38,083,544. Prior to that, the city had a record year (not counting the year in which United Hospital Center) at $93,511,444 in 2019.

So far in 2022, the biggest construction projects are on the home front. Dan Ryan Builders currently has a permit for 11 townhomes at $1,480,279 and five single family homes at $1,493,065. The Cherry Grove development has permits for six single family homes at $1,398,400.

Several other projects were discussed. Check back to Connect-Bridgeport in the days ahead for more on that front from Kerr’s report.

Kerr’s department head report is done annually by each city department to Council. Council generally has one a month through the first several months of the calendar year.
