Council Approves Contact for Deegan Dam Investigation and Remediation Project, Honors Successful Athletic Teams from BMS, BHS

By Chris Johnson on December 03, 2024

At Monday’s City Council meeting, a full crowd was on hand in Council chambers to celebrate three athletic teams – one from the high school and two from the middle school – for their recent successes

The Bridgeport High School volleyball team recently capped a 52-8-2 season by winning the Class AAA state championship. It marked the second title in head coach Ali Burton’s tenure, the previous one coming in 2018 while in AA.

Myleigh Smell, a senior on this year’s state championship team, was also recognized for being named the state’s volleyball player of the year. Additionally, Smell and teammates Kaylee Enfield, Salam Rajjoub, Calleigh Morgan and Addison Veigel were recognized for all-state and/or all-conference honors.

The Bridgeport Middle School girls soccer team was honored for a season where the Braves outscored their opposition by a combined score of 72-2 and won the Mid Mountain 10 Conference Championship.

In football, the Braves recently wrapped a perfect 8-0 season with a win against University to win the NC7 Conference Championship for the fourth consecutive year.

As far as new business on Monday’s agenda there was just one item that Council approved unanimously, a contract with Terracon Consultants, Inc., for the Deegan Dam Investigation and Remediation Project.

The contract is in the amount of $82,500.00 with an additional 10 percent contingency of $8,250.00, totaling $90,750.00.

“We had them price the project in phases,” City Engineer Beth Fox said. “We will move forward with the phases as we get more information. Basically, the initial cost of $82,500 will include everything we need to make a decision on which way need to go to make the repairs and remediation. This does not include any design work.

“We felt that was a very reasonable price and they can start within the next couple of weeks if we need them to. We hope to have some answers and alternatives proposed to Council in probably February.”

Fox was joined by Public Works Director Tiny Grimes, Jared Cummons, the city’s Superintendent of Public Utilities and associate engineer Jake Griffith to provide Council with an engineering and public works report.

They highlighted some of the projects completed or in the process of being completed this year such as the I-79 water line replacement project and the Meadowbrook Mall water line replacement project and the upgrades to lift station number six.

More details from the department report in the upcoming days on Connect-Bridgeport.

Pastor Jerry Fiscus from Living Water Church provided the invocation which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to start the regular meeting.

A 6 p.m. work session was conducted in executive session with the topic being advanced contruction planning.
