First Winter Blast of Year Cancels Activities, Delays School, Results in Area Wrecks

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 10, 2019

The area finally got a dose of true winter weather Wednesday as a system brought in wind, frigid temperatures and snowfall, resulting in hazardous road conditions.
Among other activities, area church services and bible studies were cancelled Wednesday night throughout the area.

Harrison County Schools and many school systems throughout the state operated on a two-hour delay Thursday. The only school closures were in mountain areas of Tucker, Randolph and Pendleton counties.

A number of traffic accidents occurred as a result of ice-covered roads. Wednesday evening accidents included those on Route 131, the 121 mile marker on I-79, Middleville Road and Route 50 East in the area of Crystal Ridge. Dan Riggs of Dan Riggs Towing said he towed vehicles Thursday morning which were involved in nighttime accidents on area rural roads.

Looking ahead, snow showers taper off by around 4 p.m. with a high of 25 degrees. According to the National Weather Service, there’s a chance of flurries before 1 a.m. Friday with a low around 16 degrees. Friday will be mostly sunny with a high near 32. Snow is once again likely Saturday, mainly after 10 a.m. with one to three inches possible and a high of 33. The chance of snow continues Sunday and Sunday night.
