Harrison County among Top Five Counties in State in Number of Residents Lost Since 2020 Census Report

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 22, 2023

Population losses in West Virginia are not a surprise. The state, sadly, has been one of the few nationally that continually sees more people leaving its borders than remaining inside.

What seemed a little bit surprising is that according to a blog published on the a-z-animals.com Web site, Harrison County is among the top seven counties in the Mountain State losing population. The blog, published on Sept. 13, was written by Kyle Glatz, does the rankings by number of residents lost as opposed to percentage.

Harrison County was ranked fifth with just over 1,000 residents lost since 2020. The report is based on U.S. Census numbers and estimated numbers from the government agency.

Here is what is said about Harrison County.

"Harrison County is situated in the northern part of the state, and it is bisected by the West Fork River. The county is home to several lakes and creeks as well. In 2020, the population of Harrison County was 65,922 people. The latest estimates for the region show that the population shrank to 64,915 people, a change of 1,007 individuals. This loss is equal to 1.53% of the region’s population.

"This population change makes Harrison County one of the fastest-shrinking counties in West Virginia. However, as this list has shown so far, even the fastest-shrinking counties in the state are not losing tens of thousands of people."
