Little League 10-12 All-Stars Recognized by City Council; Trick or Treat Officially Set for Halloween Day

By Chris Johnson on September 26, 2023

The Bridgeport Little League 10-12-year-old all-stars were recognized at Monday’s City Council meeting for winning the state championship over the summer.

Bridgeport defeated Martinsburg, 10-2, in the state title game and advanced to the Southeast Regional in Warner Robbins, Georgia. The state title marked the third consecutive one for this group.

“This has been a fantastic team,” manager Robby Root said. “A lot of these boys have won three straight state championships, that’s something to be really proud of. That doesn’t happen every day.”

The players and coaching staff were also presented with keys to the city by Councilman Jon Griffith, who also introduced the team.
More photos from the ceremony honoring the all-stars will be on Connect-Bridgeport in the upcoming days.

Two proclamations were read at Monday’s meeting. One recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month as ready by Mayor Andy Lang and the other recognizes the week of Sept. 25-29 as West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees Week as read by Councilman Jason Campbell.

The time and date for Trick or Treat in Bridgeport has been finalized as Council approved the proposed time of 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31 (the day of Halloween).

The only one other new business item on the agenda saw Council approve the water purchase agreement with the Clarksburg Water Board.
“It’s a standard agreement that so many years has to be updated,” Lang said. “Clarksburg Water Board sells water to several communities and I’m sure they have an agreement with every community and it establishes terms and conditions for that.”

Lang said the City of Clarksburg produces 7.3 million gallons of water per day and 1.3 million goes to Bridgeport per day.

The City’s Director of Safety, Shawn Newbrough, provided Council with a department report.

One item Newbrough said he was especially proud of was that the City had a 100 percent pass rate from random drug and alcohol testing.

He also touched on how busy his department has been the past year with projects that include two roof top HVAC units installed at the Bridgeport Public Library, a charging station installed for the library’s EV van and multiple storm drains repaired at the City Cemetery to eliminate trips hazards.

Newbrough said he is currently getting quotes to install new fire alarm systems at the library, City Hall and Benedum Civic Center.
“Our current equipment is obsolete,” Newbrough said. “The goal is to get all the buildings on one central monitoring system.”

Newbrough also said 86 city-owned assets were sold the past year for a total of $146,511.30.

Pastor Sean Wegener from Simpson Creek Baptist Church provided the invocation at the start of the regular meeting.
