Main Street Traffic Woes to Continue for Several Days as State Finishes up $300,000 Infrastructure Project

By Jeff Toquinto on March 12, 2025

For those who have been stuck in traffic much longer than usual when heading into or out of downtown Bridgeport, expect it to continue for a few more days.

On Monday, a project announced last July by the West Virginia Division of Highways at the intersection of Main Street and Virginia Avenue began. The WVDOH is replacing the traffic signal configuration at the intersection.

A Bridgeport contractor. Specialty Groups, Inc. is handling the work. They were awarded the contract with a low bid of $296,829, which a WVDOH officials said was slightly less than the estimate for the work.

While traffic issues are never good news. The positive aspect is that work is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

The City of Bridgeport is asking motorists, particularly residents familiar with the area, to attempt to use an alternate route during the work hours. Specialty Groups is working between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

What led to the project? West Virginia Division of Highways District Four Construction Engineer Jason Nelson, P.E. explained it last year.

“This signal was in need of renovation to bring its technology up to date. Also, the two ADA (American with Disabilities Act) ramps at this location needed to be updated to current ADA standards,” said West Virginia Division of Highways District Four Construction Engineer Jason Nelson, P.E.

For those who think it will involve the ADA work and just putting in new lights that would be incorrect. Nelson said the project entails a complete renovation of the signal.

“All support poles, span wires, electrical wiring, signal heads, control electronics, and other miscellaneous signal components and pavement markings will be replaced,” said Nelson last July.

Nelson also added this is a “straightforward project.” He also asked, as always, for patience with work crews to allow for their safety.

The city is directing anyone with questions regarding this project to contact the Division of Highways District Four offices at 304-842-1500.
