More Details, Aerial Photos of Slip Creating Need for Thompson Drive and Home Depot Plaza Hillside Fix

By Jeff Toquinto on February 17, 2024

Bridgeport City Council took the first step to fix a slip that stretches from Thomspon Drive at Gabe’s Plaza and goes down to Home Depot Plaza at Monday’s meeting. During the Feb. 12 meeting, Council signed a resolution to apply for a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant that would require a 25 percent city match.

Just how it will get funded has yet to be determined, as well as a timeline, but those involved know that the matter needs to be addressed sooner as opposed to later. Eventually, the federal government will pay for a $1.6 million fix, the government will combine with the city to pay for the fix, or the city itself could end up paying for the fix.

One thing that was clear after Monday’s work session where the matter was discussed is that it needs to be fixed. According to Bridgeport Emergency Management Director Tim Curry the area near Thompson Road is showing a bit of a lean. He described the damage as “extensive,” although some mitigation efforts have been taken to try to stop further slipping.

City Manager Mark Rogers added the city could face potential litigation issues also if the problem is not addressed. Businesses such as Ollie’s were hit hard with water and mud issues from an August 29 flooding event that saw more than 2 inches of rain come down in 20 minutes.

To get a better idea of the area, the above aerial photo should help. Also, there are plenty of additional aerial photos in the link below.
