More than 100 Volunteers from Shepherd's Corner to be Honored for Contributions at Saturday Luncheon

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on May 14, 2019

On May 18, more than 100 individuals who quietly do good in the Bridgeport community for the benefit of those in the city and beyond will be recognized for those efforts. On that day, volunteers who give of their time at the Shepherd’s Corner will be treated to a luncheon.

The event will be held at the All Saints Catholic Church Social Hall. It begins at noon.

“It’s going to be free for all of the volunteers. We truly want them to know how much we appreciate their hard work,” said Shirlene Isabella, Shepherd’s Corner board member and treasurer.

For decades, the organization has helped those less fortunate in the community. The group works out of a building on Pennsylvania Avenue and provides items on various fronts to families in Bridgeport and beyond.

“We accept clothes, household items, kitchen items, canned foods, monetary donates and various other food items,” said Isabella.

The organization is run by several area churches. The group then provides the assistance to families in need through Community Action and the Salvation Army.

“They send us people in need of things, such as food. For food items, they’re given vouchers and we give them all the food they need,” said Isabella. “For everything else, such as the clothing, it’s free. There are no money transactions.”

Individuals wishing to donate to Shepherd’s Corner can visit them at 119 Pennsylvania Avenue Or they can send a check. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 101, Bridgeport, WV 26330.

The money won’t be used to fund the luncheon. Isabella reached out to Dan Cava, a Bridgeport businessman who happens to be her son-in-law and he readily agreed to fund the event. The meal at All Saints will be catered by Gourmet Café out of Glen Elk. Along with the volunteers, Isabella said seven ministers from the churches involved have been invited and are expected to attend.
