Plant the Seed Slated to Close at End of 2023

By Julie Perine on August 19, 2023

Soon, summer flowers and produce at Plant the Seed in Bridgeport will give way to autumn mums, apples, and other seasonal items. Next, Christmas trees, holiday décor and goodies will be available for purchase.  But by year’s end, the store’s run will come to an end.
Owner Roy Jacob said serving the Bridgeport community has been rewarding.

“It’s just important to be around people. A lot of older people use vouchers and it’s important that they get fresh produce. It’s also important to teach people how to plant and be successful,” he said.

As Plant the Seed is a faith-based business, it’s been about more than planting tree and flower seeds, but also seeds of faith.
“We try to give out bibles here and let people know what we’re all about,” Jacob said.

The reason for the store closing is that the property - which Jacob rents - has been sold. He said it’s possible that he will discover another local place for his business. In any case, his Weston store will remain open.

“I have some other opportunities offered, but I haven’t come to any decisions,” he said. “We’ll see what God has in store for us. We’re not anxious about anything.”

Plant the Seed has been open seasonally on West Main Street since 2011. The year typically begins in the springtime, near Easter, offering daffodils, tulips, and other potted plants. As the season progresses, inventory also includes annuals, perennials, vegetable plants, fruit trees, berry bushes, and shrubs. The store also carried Amish produce, from corn, green beans, and carrots – to lettuce, cabbage, and peppers. Jams, jellies, relishes, salsa, and honey round out other items available for purchase.

Jacob said in late August/early September, fall items will roll in, and in November, Christmas trees and wreaths, and grave blankets will be among popular items stocked.

Prior to Plant the Seed, Village Emporium was in the same space.
