Volunteers Needed as Second Fall Sports Cleanup Day at Wayne Jamision Field Scheduled for Saturday

By Jeff Toquinto on August 20, 2019

With the fall prep, middle school and even youth sports seasons getting ready to arrive at Wayne Jamison Field, most teams that are going to be playing on that field want to look their best. Some parents and coaches involved with those same teams want the facilities to look their best as well.

For the second straight year, a Wayne Jamison Field Community Cleanup Day prior to fall sports has been scheduled. One of the main organizers, Gary Lhotsky, said the pretty look from a distance is a bit deceiving.

“You walk around the field and the surrounding area and look you can see debris, some trash and things that need thrown way or in need of repair or a little elbow grease,” said Lhotsky. “It’s not simply a day to pick up trash, but to put a good look on the entire facility and get rid of things not being used.”

The fall sports cleanup day is set for Saturday. Lhotsky said the starting time is 8 a.m. and will go as long as necessary.

“We probably could use two to three hours of time to make a difference,” said Lhotsky.

Lhotsky, the former BHS football standout who caught the game-winning two-point conversion in the 1988 state title win, said it’s a simple reason for doing this.

“To me there is a pride factor. Myself and (Bridgeport Middle School football Coach) Robbie Buffington talked about it that very thing,” said Lhotsky. “We want to take pride and see others take the same pride in our school facilities.”

Lhotsky said there is a laundry list of things needed beyond picking up trash. He said weed eating needs done in several areas, particularly the old Little League field area. He said old tarps need removed, the bleachers need power washed and more.

Lhotsky said some repair work is needed. He said benches need fixed and anyone willing to donate items such as wood to assist in that endeavor it would be appreciated.

“If you’ve gone down there and really look, you can see the cosmetic improvements needed,” said Lhotsky. “We’ve got the full support of (Assistant Principal and Athletic Director) Mark Jones, but now we needed manpower. We hope to see support from all the fall sports users of the facility at every level.”

Individuals wanting more information or who want to let Lhotsky know they can assist Saturday or perhaps bring a power wash or weed eater, can call him at 304-629-5531. Individuals can also just show up.
