WVU Medicine Fairmont Medical Center Laboratory Recognized for Commitment to Excellence

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on March 24, 2025

WVU Medicine Fairmont Medical Center’s (FMC) state-of-the-art Laboratory has successfully met the Laboratory Program Accreditation standards by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), international experts in laboratory accreditation. This achievement demonstrates leadership, innovation, and a commitment to standards of excellence while providing high-quality services for patients.

CAP accreditation is a globally recognized leader in laboratory regulatory compliance, with rigorous standards backed by the world’s largest board-certified pathologist organization. Laboratories that are CAP-accredited are current with laboratory medicine, technology, and regulations, which improves patient outcomes, elevates quality, and mitigates risk.

A CAP inspector visited the FMC laboratory for two days to cover regulations, identify areas in need of improvement, and verify the use of best practices. The accreditation process also examined laboratory records, quality control procedures, staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety record and program, and overall management.

“Considering that CAP’s standards rank as very high, getting such a thorough and gracious inspector and inspection outcome such as this should speak volumes about the efforts of our laboratory and facility teams to work together to advance patient care in our region,” Danyel Tacker, Ph.D., director of Clinical Chemistry at WVU Hospitals and professor in the WVU School of Medicine Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Laboratory Medicine said. “I’m grateful for the teamwork that makes this possible.”

Since its opening in 2020, FMC’s laboratory has been continuously accredited by CAP. The laboratory is also accredited by the Joint Commission and licensed and certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. These accreditations and certifications ensure patients receive the highest quality testing and reliable results.

The outpatient laboratory is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers a wide range of testing services including drug screening, clinical chemistry, complete blood count with differential, general health, hematology, urinalysis, and more.
