Off the Shelf: City Library Celebrating NaNoWriMo and it's Something Worth Investigating with a Quick Trip

By Savanna Draper on November 08, 2023 from Off the Shelf

November is National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo as it is sometimes called. It is celebrated annually from November 1 through November 30.

NaNoWriMo was founded in 1999 by Chris Baty and his friends who wanted to challenge themselves to write a novel in a month. Since that time, it has grown into a global writing phenomenon, inspiring countless writers to unleash their creativity. While NaNoWriMo has since formed into a non-profit organization and provides tools, structure, community, and encouragement for writers during the month of November and beyond, many people forge their own paths and make their own goals to achieve during NaNoWriMo. The library has a plethora of resources and books to help you achieve your writing goals this month.

Writer's Reference Center? is the essential one-stop online reference for writers, with all the tools necessary to write and research effectively. This resource covers the writing fundamentals, grammar and punctuation, writing with style, a guide to research, and other reference materials. It also contains a guide to documents which gives you tips and tricks on writing several documents including cover letters, resumes, essays, theses, presentations, and more. This resource is free to Bridgeport Public Library cardholders and can be accessed at bplwv.org/research-and-reference.

Write It All Down: How to Put Your Life on the Page by Cathy Rentzenbrink is a book that will help you discover the pleasure to be found in writing, the satisfaction of getting a story onto a page, and seeing the events of your life transformed through the experience of writing a memoir. Full of tips and tricks, this book is perfect for seasoned writers as well as writing amateurs and everyone in between.

Self-Publishing for Dummies by Jason Rich takes you through the entire process of publishing your own books, starting with the writing and editing process and moving through cover design, printing options, distribution channels, and marketing to a target audience.

Writing Children's Books for Dummies by Lisa Rojany-Buccieri will teach you the fundamentals of writing for children, common book formats and genres, and the structure of the children's book market. You will also learn how to create a spellbinding story with scene description, engaging dialogue, and a child-friendly tone.

How to Not Write Bad: The Most Common Writing Problems and the Best Ways to Avoid Them by Ben Yagoda illustrates how we can all write better, clearer, and for a wider readership. The author offers advice on what he calls 'not-writing-badly,' which consists of the ability to craft sentences that are correct in terms of spelling, word choice, punctuation, and grammar, and that also display clarity, precision, and grace.

In addition to the resources mentioned above, we also offer The Write Connection, which is our monthly writing group. We have a short writing exercise each meeting, time to give advice, and tips to improve your writing and to navigate the publishing world. Writers of all genres, from poetry to fanfiction, are invited to attend. Take a moment to get out of your comfort zone and make the Write Connection! We always meet on the first Tuesday of the month. You can register to attend The Write Connection at bplwv.org/events.
