Off the Shelf: If You Enjoy the World of Wicked, City's Library has Books if Movie Left You Wanting More

By Savanna Draper on December 04, 2024 from Off the Shelf

Have you made it to the theater to see the new Wicked movie yet? If you haven’t, I recommend checking it out and forming your own opinion. While many loved it, some have mixed feelings about the film, preferring Wicked the Musical. Regardless of your thoughts about the cinematic version, if you generally enjoy the world of Wicked, the library has some books that would fit the bill if the movie left you wanting more (for better or worse!)

The Book of Gothel by Mary McMyne is told from the witch's perspective. This book is a historical retelling filled with dark magic, crumbling towers, mysterious woods, and evil princes. In Germany, 1156, Haelewise has never quite fit in. Since she was shunned by her village, her only solace lies in the stories her mother tells. When her mother dies, Haelewise is left unmoored, and with nothing left for her in her village, she sets out to find the legendary tower her mother spoke of, a place called Gothel.

In Wendy, Darling by A. C. Wise, Wendy Darling grew up. She has a husband, a young daughter called Jane, and a life in London. One night, after all these years, Peter Pan returns. Wendy finds him outside her daughter's window, looking to claim a new mother for his Lost Boys, but instead of Wendy, he takes Jane. Now a grown woman and mother, Wendy must follow Peter back to Neverland to rescue her daughter and finally face the darkness at the heart of the island...

A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow is a vivid, subversive, and feminist reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, where destiny is no match for courage, sisterhood, stubbornness, and a good working knowledge of fairy tales. In this story, it's Zinnia Gray's twenty-first birthday, which is special because it's the last birthday she'll ever have. When she was young, an accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness, just that no one has lived past twenty-one. Can Zinnia escape her fate?

In Charon’s Crossing, where Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune takes place, the tea is hot, the scones are fresh, and the dead are just passing through. When a reaper comes to collect Wallace from his own funeral, Wallace begins to suspect he might be dead. When Hugo, the owner of a peculiar tea shop, promises to help him cross over, Wallace decides he's definitely dead. Even in death, he's not ready to abandon the life he barely lived, so when Wallace is given one week to cross over, he tries to live a lifetime in seven days.

These books and more can be found at the Bridgeport Public Library.
