Off the Shelf: If You're a Reader, it's a Good Week for You as Multiple New Books Receiving Critical Praise

By Sharon Saye on October 28, 2020 from Off the Shelf

This is a good week for readers with a stack of brand-new books either garnering loads of praise or by favorite authors.

“The Cold Millions” by Jess Walter, the best-selling author of “Beautiful Ruins” provides a “propulsive, richly entertaining novel about two brothers swept up in the turbulent class warfare of the early twentieth century.”  It is the story of the Dolans: Gig, who wants to see change for the working man, and Rye, who just wants a normal ordinary life.  When the two brothers get involved with Ursula the Great, a vaudeville singer, both their lives are catapulted into forces beyond their control.

“House of Correction” by Nicci French involves a young woman placed under arrest for murder in England; she is convinced she is innocent, but with a history of depression and mental illness maybe her memories are not too be trusted.

Stuart Woods will delight his Stone Barrington fans with the latest in the series, “Shakeup.”  Stone is just looking for peace and quiet, but when a grisly murder turns up on his doorstep what else is he supposed to do?

Fannie Flagg returns to the scene of her most famous book, “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café” with “The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop.”

Bud Threadgoode was brought up by his mother, Ruth, and his Aunt Idgie who ran the Whistle Stop Café.  Now years later grown-up with his own grown-up kids, he decides to return to Whistle Stop to see what has happened to all his friends and acquaintances.

Other new books are: “You Betrayed Me” by Lisa Jackson, “The Midnight Library” by Matthew Haig, “Memorial by Bryan Washington, “The Searcher” by Tana French, “Jack” by Marilynne Robinson, “Night Swim’ by Megan Goldin, “In a Holidaze” by Christina Lauren and “Atomic Love” by Jennie Fields.
