Off the Shelf: Library Has Plenty of Reading Options to Help Enhance Family Fun Time in the Fall

By Savanna Draper on October 18, 2023 from Off the Shelf

October is the best time for enjoying fall activities with your friends and family! The changing colors of the leaves make a lovely backdrop for visiting pumpkin patches, going on hayrides, and going apple picking. It’s also a great time to do some fall baking using fresh, in-season ingredients such as apples and pumpkins. Continue reading to find some books that will give you some ideas of how to take advantage of all this season has to offer.

From Harvest to Home: Seasonal Activities, Inspired Decor, and Cozy Recipes for Fall by Alicia Tenise Chew is for anyone who loves all things fall! This book has tons of creative ideas for autumnal activities, decorations, and recipes. This book will inspire you to craft a fall wreath, plan a tailgate party, go apple picking, host a spooky movie marathon, and make all the fall-inspired recipes!

Fall Baking: Southern Harvest Favorites by Brooke Bell includes over 75 harvest recipes and photographs to fill your kitchen with autumn’s warm flavors and aromas including golden and bubbly pies, cobblers, and crisps to decadent cakes that are drizzled, frosted, and glazed with fall flavor. These recipes will make your mouth water!

Flavors of Fall: Homemade Breads, Hearty Soups & Stews, Incredible Main Courses, Decadent Desserts, and More Family Favorites by Centennial Kitchen offers more than 200 recipe favorites featuring the best of fall ingredients such as apples, pears, pumpkin, cranberries, winter squash, cabbage, and root vegetables. Chapters include appetizers and beverages, casseroles, hearty main dishes, one-pan meals, soups and stews, sandwiches and pizzas, and salads and sides.

If you have a little one at home, be sure to pick up some fall books to read with them as well! Check out Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht where readers can follow along with each step, from picking out the perfect pumpkin from the patch (tall and lean, short and fat, green, orange, or white,) to taking it home, scooping out the insides, carving a scary face, and finally lighting a candle inside to create a one-of-a-kind glowing jack-o'-lantern!

Mouse's First Fall by Lauren Thompson describes the leaves of all colors including red, yellow, orange, and brown, to leaves of all shapes and sizes, from pointy to round on one windy, autumn day. Mouse learns that fall is a season full of fun!

Awesome Autumn by Bruce Goldstone is full of facts about autumn! With colorful photographs, lively explanations, and craft ideas, this book explains why leaves change color, animals fly south or get ready to hibernate, people harvest crops and dress up as scary creatures for Halloween, and all the other amazing things that happen as the air turns crisp and cool.
