Off the Shelf: October Filled with New Book Releases

By Savanna Draper on October 04, 2023 from Off the Shelf

This October is packed full of new book releases you don’t want to miss! Whether you like memoirs, general fiction, mystery and suspense, fantasy, or just about anything else, you won’t be disappointed by the books coming out this month. The best part is all of these are free for you to read with your Bridgeport Public Library card.

For those who enjoy memoirs, two high-profile celebrities are releasing their stories this month. John Stamos’ memoir, If You Would Have Told Me details his journey from working in food service to becoming a household name for his acting career. His is a universal story about friendship, love, loss, and the courage to embrace love once more. Britney Spears’ tell-all memoir The Woman in Me shares her truth and struggles. This book reveals the power of music and love, and the importance of a woman telling her own story, on her own terms.

If you like fantasy, you will want to check out Starling House by Alix E. Harrow. Eden, Kentucky, is just another small town known only for the legend of E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth-century author and illustrator who wrote The Underland and then disappeared. Before she vanished, Starling House appeared. But everyone agrees that it’s best to leave the house and its last heir alone. Another fantasy novel of note is Night of the Witch by Sara Raasch and Beth Revis. These authors weave a tale of romance, vengeance, and magic in this start to the Witch and Hunter duology, which will be an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance.

For mystery and thriller lovers, Jo Nesbo has a new thriller, The Night House. In the wake of his parents' tragic deaths, fourteen-year-old Richard has been sent to live with his aunt and uncle. Richard quickly earns a reputation as an outcast, and when a classmate goes missing, everyone suspects the new, angry boy is responsible for his disappearance…

If you prefer period-piece mysteries, check out A Traitor in Whitehall by Julia Kelly. Set in 1940 England, Evelyne Redfern is working at a factory in wartime London. When Mr. Fletcher, one of her father's friends, spots Evelyne on a night out, Evelyne finds herself plunged into the world of Prime Minister Winston Churchill's cabinet war rooms. With her quick wit, sharp eyes, and determination, will Evelyne be able to find out who's been selling England's secrets and catch a killer?

If you are seeking a lighter fiction book with a bit of romance, you will want to read The Burnout by Sophie Kinsella. Main character Sasha is burnt out by her day-to-day life, her romantic life, her job, you name it! But when Sasha meets Finn, sparks fly. Set in a resort on the British seaside, this book is funny and might even be relatable!
