Off the Shelf: Plans for the Library's Summer Reading Program are Underway

By Sharon Saye on April 24, 2019 from Off the Shelf

Plans for this year’s summer reading program are underway. The theme is “It’s Showtime” and it will start in early June.  More details will be available in future columns.  We are going to do things differently this year so be prepared for some changes.

May’s children’s programs are different as well mixing new and old.  Among the spectacularly new is the presentation by Outer Rim Praxeum who will present a lightsaber class on May 4, 2019 at 2 p.m.  In honor of Star Wars Day, participants will learn the secrets of the lightsaber followed by a kyber crystal scavenger hunt.  Participants will memorize the Jedi code before being “knighted” as an official Jedi.  Just Google the group to see how the word “spectacular” fits this program.

Books and Barks will also be here that Saturday, May 4th from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The Mountaineer Therapy Dogs will be present and eager to have children read stories aloud to them.  All children are invited to participate.  Registration is required.

Wiggly Wednesdays continues every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. throughout May.  This story time incorporates creative movement activities.  It welcomes participants from ages 4-8.  Story Time also continues every Friday at 10:30 a.m.; it is an early literacy program for children under the age of three.

Squishy Circuits is scheduled on Thursday, May 16th at 6 p.m.  Registration is required and space is limited.  This program is for children ages 8-12.  Squishy Circuits is fun, easy and inspires creativity.  Projects use two play doughs, one that is conductive and one that is insulative.  This program is a fun way to learn about basic science principles.

The library is showing two movies for children during May.  On Thursday, May 2nd at 6 p.m., we will be showing ”The Kid Who Would Be King,” which retells the legend of Excalibur and Merlin, and on Saturday, May 11th at 1 p.m., kids can enjoy “The Lego Movie 2.”  Pizza and refreshments will be provided.  Registration is required.

The monthly reading group for kids meets on Thursday, May 9th at 6 p.m.  This month’s selection is “Pax” by Sara Pennypacker in which Peter rescues a fox, but when he must move in with his grandfather, he can’t take Pax with him.  But neither Peter nor Pax can endure the separation and Peter risks it all to trek back for his best friend.  The group is geared for ages eight through 12.  Copies of the book are available from Amy at the library.
