Off the Shelf: Summer Reading Program has Ended, but Plenty of Activity Still Ongoing at Public Library

By Sharon Saye on July 31, 2019 from Off the Shelf

Even though the summer reading program has ended, programs continue at the library.  The library will be closed on August 1, 2019 for our annual staff training day.  This year we will have speakers on the changing world of libraries, safety and ergonomics, and database instructions.

Adults can enjoy a series of movie matinees beginning on Friday, August 2nd with “Breakthrough” which is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds, “Mia and the White Lion” on August 9th about a young girl whose life is turned upside down when her family leaves London to manage a lion farm in South Africa,  “Tolkien” on August 12th about the  famed author of “The Lord of the Rings,” “Unplanned” on August 19th about the youngest clinic director of Planned Parenthood who has a life-changing experience, “Hustle” on Friday, August 23rd about two swindlers after the ultimate score, and “A Dog’s Journey” on Friday, August 30th, a sequel to the heart-warming global hit “A Dog’s Purpose,” where beloved dog Bailey finds his new destiny.  All the movies are scheduled at 1 p.m.

Tea & Talk continues with Grantchester on Monday, August 5 and 12th at 1 p.m. with discussion of season 4.  Colorful Yarns meet on Tuesdays, August 6 and 20th at 6:30 p.m. for members to share ideas while the Nesting Knitters meet on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. throughout the month for members to bring current projects.

Bookin’ It returns on Tuesdays, August 13th and 27th at 2 p.m. with low-impact aerobics classes for adults and senior citizens. And Senior Live ‘N Learn features a History Alive Performance about Minnie Pearl on Tuesday, August 20th at 2 p.m.

Reading Groups continue throughout August with Book Talk’s discussion of “The Book Women of Troublesome Creek” by Kim Michele Richardson on Wednesday, August 21st at 4 p.m., Read in Red’s discussion of “Then She Was Gone” by Lisa Jewell on Friday, August 16th at 12 p.m. and our new group focusing on nonfiction with a discussion of best-seller, “Educated” by Tara Westover, on Monday, August 26th at 6 p.m.

Anyone is welcome to these discussions.  We have a limited number of copies of the books available so please ask for Joanne or Tyler at the library.
