Off the Shelf: Summer Reading Set to Start in Just a Few Short Weeks

By Sharon Saye on May 15, 2019 from Off the Shelf

It is hard to believe that the Summer Reading Program starts in a few weeks.  Registration begins Thursday, May 30th for the first session.  The theme is “It’s Showtime,” and will include interactive programs as well as extensive lists of recommended reads organized thematically.  Inside some of these recommendations are golden tickets.  Find a golden ticket and redeem for a prize.

Participants who register are eligible to win prizes and attend programs.  We recommend that you register as early as possible since programs reach maximum capacity quickly.

At the time of registration, participants are given a packet containing reading lists, activity sheets and calendars of events.  Please be vigilant as the calendar of events is subject to change.  Registration for children requires the presence of an adult with a Bridgeport Public Library Card.

This year we are trying something different; we have divided the program up into two sessions, one for June and another for July.  The programs are mostly the same in the two sessions but scheduled at different times so that parents who work in the daytime and can only bring their child to the Thursday night program will get a chance to experience the Tuesday afternoon programs in July.

We have noticed that many people take vacation as soon as school is over and can’t start summer reading until later, or, that they are out of town in July and their children miss one half of the programs.  This way parents can enroll their children in either sessions, or both.  It is up to them which works best for their summer schedules.

The first session kicks off with “The Culture of Music” by Tony M. on Monday, June 3rd at 6:00 p.m.; the regular programs on Tuesdays at noon include Bibliobop Dance Party, Spidersona, and Eric Carle Creations.  Thursday evening programs include Pokeball Terrariums and Movie Makers.  Calendars of events are included in the registration packet and will be available on our websites.
