Off the Shelf: With Dark, Cold Days of January in Play, the Library has Plenty to Winter Time Activities

By Sharon Saye on January 08, 2020 from Off the Shelf

The holidays are over and the long, dark, cold days of January take over.  The library has a new schedule of programs from our regular book clubs to our movie matinees.  The full schedule can be accessed on the library’s website at www2.youseemore.com/bridgeport/ and flyers are available at each circulation desks.  Coming this month is a new online calendar, so please look for it

The library has a series of book groups that meet every month.  There is a contemporary book group on the third Wednesday of the month at 4 p.m.  Anyone is welcome to the discussion, but quantities of each month’s selection are limited.  On Wednesday, January 15th, readers will be discussing “Educated” by Tara Westover, a memoir about how her family kept her away from school, but she yearned for an education and eventually attended a prestigious Eastern university.

Read in Red is the mystery book club and January’s selection is “Buried Secrets” by T. J. Brearton.  The meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 17th at noon.  Real Reads focuses on nonfiction and this month’s title is “I am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai.  It meets on January 27trh at 5:30 p.m.

Children can participate in Pizza and Pages on Thursday, January 9th at 6 p.m.  Children interested in the program are invited to read the book in time for the scheduled discussion.  A limited number of copies are available, please see Amy at the library to borrow a copy.

Movies continue throughout the month as well.  On Friday, January 10th at 1 p.m. you can enjoy the film version of “Downton Abbey.” “Ad Astra” starring Brad Pitt about an astronaut confronted with what happened to his father will be shown on Monday, January 13th at 6 p.m.  And children will want to see “Abominable” on Thursday, January 16th at 6 p.m. about a young teenager and his friends who discover a Yeti on the roof of their apartment building and do everything to save the beast and help him find his way home.

The library has other programs as well including Watercolor Marble Scarves, Puzzling Puzzles, and Crystal Snowflakes designed to make the dreary days of winter more exciting.
