Bridgeport's Boys Basketball Team's 7-1 Start Leads to Top 10 'AA' Ranking in Initial MetroNews Power Poll

By Jeff Toquinto on January 10, 2019

With the first MetroNews Boys High School Basketball Power Index out, Bridgeport finds in the top 20 among all schools in the state and in the top 10 in Class AA. The Indians are in that position thanks to their 7-1 start on the year.

The rankings have the Tribe listed as the No. 19 team in the state regardless of classification. When it comes to ‘AA’ rankings that Indians come in at No. 9.

Martinsburg is currently the top-ranked team in the state and in Class AAA with a perfect 8-0 mark. Bluefield at 7-0 is No. 6 overall and No. 1 in Class AA.

The top five in Class AA are Fairmont Senior (8-1) at No. 2 and No. 8 overall; defending state champion Chapmanville (9-1) at No. 3 and No. 9 overall, Logan (7-1) at No. 4 and No. 11 overall; and Frankfort (9-0) at No. 5 and No. 13 overall.

Bridgeport’s Saturday evening opponent, rival Robert C. Byrd, is 6-2 and ranked No. 6 in Class AA and comes in at No. 16 in the overall ranking. Both teams are in action tonight with the Indians traveling to face North Marion and the Eagles facing Elkins.

The Huskies are 5-3 on the season. Elkins stands at 5-2. Regardless of the outcome, that sets up a top 10 Class AA battle between the long-time foes Saturday at the RCB gymnasium. Game time for that game, as well as tonight’s contests, is set for 7:30 p.m.

The MetroNews rankings are not based on votes. The poll is a computer generated ranking that uses classification and strength of schedule to determine the standings.
