Indians Girls Basketball Team Ranked in Top Part of Initial MetroNews Power Poll Despite Four Losses

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 11, 2019

Despite having four losses as the regular season nears the halfway point, Bridgeport’s girls basketball team is faring pretty well in the first MetroNews Girls Basketball Power Rankings poll.

The Indians are currently ranked No. 12 in Class AA and are ranked 31st in the state regardless of classification. The Tribe is ranked there with a 6-4 record as the computer poll was calculated Jan. 9, prior to the Indians 65-32 victory against Grafton later that day that left them at 7-4 on the year.

Bridgeport’s four losses have been to Class AAA foes Buckhannon-Upshur and George Washington as well as to Class AA Fairmont Senior and Lincoln. The losses to the ‘AAA’ foes came in the last seconds, as did the loss to the Polar Bears who are 9-1 and the No. 1 team in Class AA.

The setback to the Cougars, which also wasn’t decided until the final moments, also comes against a top 10 team. Lincoln, at 6-1 at the time of the poll, is currently ranked No. 5 in the ‘AA’ standings and No. 14 overall.

BHS will look to improve on the mark this evening. The Indians face No. 16 overall and No. 6 Class AA opponent North Marion. The Huskies have been a state power in recent years and will be visiting Bridgeport this evening for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Greenbrier East is the No. 1 team in the state as well as Class AAA at 10-1. The top-ranked Class A squad is St. Joseph Central at 7-1 and the squad is also ranked No. 12 overall.
