Morgantown Downs Bridgeport, 5-1, to Force Decisive Game 3 in Class AAA Region I Tournament

By Chris Johnson on May 21, 2024

Hunter Dakan tossed a complete-game two-hitter to lead Morgantown past Bridgeport in Game 2 of the Class AAA Region I tournament on Tuesday at Dale Miller Park.

With the win, Morgantown improves to 28-8, while Bridgeport falls to 32-5.

Game 3 will be back in Bridgeport Wednesday with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the state tournnament next week in Charleston.

The Mohigans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI groundout by Tristan Milik.

After three no-hit innings to start the game, Hunter Dakan surrendered a lead-off double in the fourth to Zach Rohrig, who eventually came around to score on Mark Biafore’s sacrifice fly.

Carson Currey relieved Rowen Michaelis with one out in the bottom of the fourth and runners on first and second. The Mohigans loaded the bases which led to Koa Silvers hitting a two-run single with two outs to make it 3-1.

“We’re not hitting,” BHS coach Robert Shields said. “Even when we put the ball in play we aren’t hitting the ball hard. Tomorrow, that’s it. They either come to the plate with the right mindset or we are going to get beat.

“We’re at home and we have to show up with our ‘A’ game."

The Mohigans broke a 1-all tie in the fourth on a two-out two-run single from Koa Silvers. They then got a two-run double from Caleb Nutter in the fifth to extend the lead.

Rohrig had the Indians' other hit, a one-out single in the sixth.

Draken did walk three batters and hit two but he struck out four and was aided by two double plays by the Morgantown defense.

Rowen Michaelis was tagged with the loss for Bridgeport. He went 3 1-3 innings, allowing three hits, three runs, walking three and striking out two. Carson Currey pitched 2 2-3 innings of relief and surrendered two runs, six hits, one walk and struck out one.

The loss snapped an 11-game win streak for the Indians. It was also their first loss of the season that wasn't a one-run game.

Editor's Note: In top photo Dalak delivers a pitch. In the bottom photo, Bridgeport's Dylan Duvall looks to make a play as  Morgantown's Tristan Milik makes his way to third.
