The Grapevine: Eastern Panhandle's Rich History and Finding Fine Local Dining Amidst a Sea of Chains

By Rosalyn Queen on July 09, 2019 from The Grapevine

If I had a bucket list it would be a bit smaller as I travelled to our beautiful eastern anhandle this past week.  I have visited many places in this world and in West Virginia but never to Harper's Ferry.  I went there with my daughter Leslie and son-in-law Dixon.  They were wanting to tube down the  Shenandoah River.  Harper's Ferry offers this experience and it was a two hour journey of enjoyment.

There is a rich history of John Brown and the part he played in the raid there.  He was later hung for his actions. A wax museum houses the figures of Brown and those involved in this part of history.

For those wanting to hike through this area of the state there is the Appalachian Trail. At one point you can view three states where they meet and the joining of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.  There is a museum and much history to be learned.

We stayed in Charles Town which is only a few miles from Harper's Ferry.  Charles Town is the home of the Hollywood Casino which also features horse racing.  There are many fine chain restaurants at the resort but we ran across a home town place which was one of the finest places I have ever eaten. It was the Mountain View Diner and Restaurant.  The menu was varied and even offered Greek Specialties.  It had breakfast, lunch and dinner and offered daily specials.  We each had ham, turkey and meatloaf served with gravy and mashed potatoes.  And much to our delight the potatoes were real.  Each serving offered soup and two sides.  The French onion soup was to die for.  None of us were able to clean our plates.  And now for the corker, we were unable to enjoy a number of the homemade deserts that were offered. And to top it off the prices were very fair. After we got back to the hotel and enjoyed a dip in the pool we decided to go back and get desert.  The cream pies and cakes fulfilled our expectations.

Believe me it would be worth the drive to enjoy some of our state's history and have dinner at this Diner.  They are located on Washington Street and their phone number is 304-728-8522.  Take my word for it this is a local diner that has earned a great reputation.

Now that the Fourth of July is over I hope you enjoyed the holiday.  As a young girl I remember the parades and the tributes we payed to our military and how proud the families were that had members serving our country.  I was a little disappointed in all the controversy this year. This is a time to celebrate the founding of our great country.   But a big thank you to our military for keeping us safe and free.  The signing of the Declaration of Independence means a lot to me.

Keep safe, stay out of the heat ,keep in touch and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine."
