The Grapevine: Look Back at Mother's Day as Well as the Passing of Two Prominent Community Leaders

By Rosalyn Queen on May 12, 2022 from The Grapevine

The month of May has sneaked in on us and with it the observance of Mother’s Day. I like to think that the whole month is a time to celebrate Mother’s Day, but then why not the entire year.

Most of you who are my age or near it can spend time thinking of all our mother did for us now that she is gone. Most of our memories are wonderful and we all hope that just one more time we could spend a few minutes telling her how much we love her and thank her for all she did for us. But most of us can only relive these memories in our hearts.

If you are lucky enough to still have your mother be sure you let her know what she means to you. I laugh when I think of those little things that aggravate my kids, like talking with food in my mouth or talking too loudly or asking people who they are when I cannot remember their name. I often think that this will furnish them many laughs later in life.

Remember your mother is the foundation that you are built on. Many times, something will happen that will make you think that is exactly what mom did. And there will be many times when you wish you could do something just like mom did. She built that foundation that makes you who you are today. Be sure to thank her, if you haven’t already on her special day, and all year round.

Although in the rearview mirror, a Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there.

It was with sadness that I said goodbye to my longtime friend Jeanny Kalaycioglu. Talk about memories, I have a bushel full with Jeanny. The first time I met her was at the Y at her belly dancing classes and her teaching culture classes. Then as we got older, we both worked on different events such as the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary and the Holly Ball. Then there was a merger of a marriage that kind of hooked our two families together and Jeanny and I always laughed when Kelly would say that we were related. They were movie goers and many afternoons we would meet them at the local theatre to watch a movie. We thank Jeanny for the many happy memories she filled our hearts with.

Our condolences to Stephanie Genin and her family on the passing of Jim. Thanks to Jim for all the people he helped our area.

Even with all the sadness around us, we can welcome Spring with a happy look. The first Saturday in May marked the Kentucky Derby and once again I enjoyed some happy memories of the time I attended the Derby.

Memories make old age happy. Relive those memories while we can still remember.

Take care, stay healthy and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
