The Grapevine: PWA of Harrison County to Celebrate Black History Month, Suffrage Movement in February

By Rosalyn Queen on January 09, 2020 from The Grapevine

The Progressive  Women’s Association of Harrison County has announced that on February 14, a special luncheon will be held in celebration of Black Culture & History Month.  This special annual luncheon will include commemorating the 100th celebration of the 19th Amendment, which gave women in America the right to vote.

Included in this event will be special recognition for Susan B. Anthony who played a significant part on the passage of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery and the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote.  Anthony was a crusader in her time when women were not usually welcomed to speak in public.  She was a leader in social reform.  She organized a petition drive that brought in four hundred thousand signatures in support of the abolition of slavery.  If not for the work of Susan B. Anthony, the United States would have become a very different place.

The PWA luncheon is held in conjunction with Black Culture & History Month when the PWA recognizes African American Women of Distinction from Harrison County.  The event is sponsored annually by the Davis Funeral Home.  The luncheon is open to the public and reservations should be made in advance by calling 304-624-6881. Seating is limited.

This PWA luncheon is part of the yearlong celebration being organized by Secretary of
State Mac Warner's office.  The Coordinating Committee for the WV Centennial Celebration of the 19th Amendment is co-chaired by the Democratic Party State Chairwoman Belinda Biafore of Fairmont and Republican Party State Chairwoman Melody Potter of Charleston.  The Coordinating Committee consists of community, government and civic leaders from throughout the State.

Tentative plans for the PWA event is a keynote speaker, a professor from WVU and an art display of women involved in this historic movement. More information will be forthcoming.

As we start the New Year, I urge you to resolve to be a better person and to reach out to those who need help in our community. First take a few steps to improve your own situation and then reach out to those less fortunate then you. By helping others we achieve a certain feeling that improves our outlook and our community.  Reassess your goals and do not concentrate only on financial goals but give more time to personal achievements.

I wish you and yours a healthy and Happy New Year.  Keep in touch and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
