The Grapevine: The Passing of a Well-Known Local, Women’s History and St. Patrick’s Day

By Rosalyn Queen on March 16, 2019 from The Grapevine

It seems that every month has a special designation, and some have several.  March is designated as Women's History Month.  Annually the President proclaims the week beginning on March 7 as the beginning of the month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history.  If we were to do some research, we would surely find many events that women have made contributions to that have enhanced our communities and especially our standards of living.  I hope that many of you will have the opportunity to call attention to these events and the women who have made them possible.

This past week my daughter, Leslie, Hannah Griffin and I made a trip to Charleston to observe the legislators in session on next to their last day.  Since most of you know that we are an active political family then you might understand why we are interested in these happenings.  My grandson, Ben Queen was on the floor and participating in the voting of the different bills that were brought up.  The galleys were full of visitors and there was much interest in the happenings.  We did run into Dr. Mark Manchin, Dr. Hagge and Ms. Griffith from the Harrison County Board of Education.  We spent some time in the Secretary of State’s office where Mike Queen is employed.  We also enjoyed a lunch in the cafeteria of the Capitol.  The legislature is complete for this session, but I understand the governor may call a special session in June for unfinished business. I truly think that everyone should make at least one visit to the capitol to see this important part of our government.  Contact one of your delegates or Senators for assistance in planning a visit.

Everyone seems to be singing the praises of the staff at the Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center.  They have really put together a wonderful schedule that appeals to all different ages in our community.  Many of the events have been "sold out."  We must. Continue to support the programming so that the financial future of the Center will be secure.  There is a ballroom and a special meeting room that is available to the public for meetings, receptions and parties.  If you are interested in renting these facilities call the Center and a staff member will be glad to assist you.

St. Patrick's Day is here, and I hope you found your green apparel and will wear it to honor all our Irish friends.  Lent is now in full force and we should all be trying to observe Lent in a special way.

I extend my condolences to the Selerno family, Alexander family and the Lindsey family.

This week seems like we may be seeing Spring real soon.  But I do not want to get too anxious, because you know the old saying "we usually have an Easter snow."

Stay safe, keep in touch and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through the Grapevine."
