After Seeing $15 Million in New Investment, Historic Hotel Morgan in Monongalia County has Reopened

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on March 28, 2021

Morgantown’s popular High Street now has a high-end boutique hotel open for visitors. Gov. Justice this week announced the grand reopening of Hotel Morgan, a historic lodging property that has been reimagined after more than $15 million in new investment.

“What a wonderful day for the city of Morgantown and the state of West Virginia,” Gov. Justice said. “Today, we celebrated the transformation of one of West Virginia’s most historic lodging properties into an outstanding hotel and conference center. Without a doubt, Morgantown is on a roll. Every time I visit this area, there is new development left and right. I’m so proud and can’t wait to see this hotel provide both residents and visitors with the one-of-a-kind hospitality found only in Almost Heaven.”

The renovation project touches all 81 guest rooms and suites of the hotel and includes more than 6,000 square feet of ballroom space for meetings, conferences, and events. The renovations were designed to restore the property to its original grandeur and provide a luxury experience for visitors.

“We are thrilled to once again be part of the community,” said Robert Mickey, General Manager of Hotel Morgan. “Our team looks forward to serving our guests and helping to bring Hotel Morgan back as an epicenter of history, culture, and celebration. We are honored to continue Hotel Morgan’s legacy of service and dedication to the community.”

Built in 1925, the remodel focuses on a revitalization to the property that balances the modern furnishings and amenities travelers today seek in their lodging stays, while still honoring the historic framework that has made the hotel a cherished landmark for more than nine decades.

“Mountaineer Country is one of our fast-growing tourism regions, with traveler spending topping more than $479 million each year. We are thrilled to see this historic gem reopen, better than ever,” said Secretary Chelsea Ruby of the West Virginia Department of Tourism. “We extended our greatest thanks to the Thrash Group and all the folks who worked on this breathtakingly beautiful renovation. This project embodies the vibrancy of the area, and I look forward to seeing its success.”

Hotel Morgan is a recipient of the West Virginia Tourism Development Act tax credit program, which encourages entrepreneurs and companies to create and expand tourism development projects in West Virginia that showcase the wealth and beauty the state has to offer.

Since 2019, the Tourism Development Act tax credit program has received more applications than the first decade of the program alone. Recent applications represent more than $250 million in investment in West Virginia’s tourism industry.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in this project for their investment and contributions to the state and local economies,” said Secretary Mitch Carmichael of the West Virginia Department of Economic Development. “Through this project, we are providing real jobs for hardworking West Virginians and seeing direct growth in one of our state’s most vital industries.”

Hotel Morgan is open and accepting reservations. Discover the hotel’s new amenities and accommodations at www.hotelmorgan.com.
