After Six-Plus Years, Eatery Focusing on Sweets and also Serving Hoagies, Pizza, and More, Set to Close

By Jeff Toquinto on January 08, 2025

Editor's Note: Co-Owner Dennis Mazza has informed us that the bakery will be open an additional week - and will close at the end of the work day Friday, Jan. 17.

After roughly a half dozen years, a Harrison County business known for its sweet treats headed by donuts, along with pepperoni rolls and hoagies, and most recently its hoagies, is shutting its doors,

Sweet Nana’s Donuts and Poppy's Italian Bakery, located just outside the Clarksburg City limits, will close its doors for good on Friday, Jan. 17, according to one of the co-owners Dennis Mazza.

The reason?

“The location we believe is the key reason, not the product. We just didn’t do enough business,” he said.

The business is situated at 1877 Philippi Pike between Clarksburg and Anmoore. It is a bit off the beaten path.

For those who think it has been there for a longer period of time, they are not totally incorrect. There was a donut shop there prior.

For those who think the address and location is familiar for another reason, you would be correct. The site is also home to Roger and Mazza’s Italian Bakery.

“We’re doing good, really good at the bakery. When people heard Sweet Nana’s was closing, there were some who were afraid we were shutting down,” said Mazza. “That is definitely not the case.”

The bakery specializes in their own pepperoni rolls. The rolls can be purchased at convenience stores and retail outlets throughout the area and well beyond as it is one of several long-standing businesses featuring the pepperoni roll. In fact, this is the 30-year anniversary of Roger and Mazza’s.

While the business primarily sells the pepperoni rolls at retail outlets, larger orders and other possible pickup arrangements can be made by contacting the store. They can be reached at 304-622-6682.

As for the space occupied by Sweet Nana’s in the same building, Mazza said early plans are in place for another business venture. He said it will almost certainly be food related.

Sweet Nana’s has been closed Monday and Tuesday due to weather. They are expected to be open for the remaining three days of the week, including today.
