Bridge in City Slated to be Replaced as Part of Future WVDOH Project and Comes with $1.36M Price Tag

By Jeff Toquinto on September 24, 2024

A small Bridgeport bridge under the auspices of the West Virginia Division of Highways is set to essentially be replaced and it appears the project will begin next year.

According to WVDOH District Four Construction Engineer Jason Nelson, P.E., the unnamed span is the bridge crossing Simpson Creek just upstream from the Simpson Creek Covered Bridge. It is the structure off Meadowbrook Road (Johnson Avenue) below Meadowbrook Mall and opposite the intersection of Club View Drive.

“The bridge is the one that carries Murphys Run Road over Simpson Creek, basically at the entrance to our headquarters office for (DOH) District Four,” said Nelson.

Bids for the work were due on August 13. Since that time, bids have been received and the project awarded. RK Construction of Frametown in West Virginia had the winning bid of $1,362,080.36, which Nelson said was near the engineer's estimate.

“This project involves the complete replacement of all the superstructure (beams, deck, etc.) and some abutment repairs,” said Nelson. “The abutments are being reused.”

During the work, the bridge will be completely shut down. However, Nelson said traffic impacts should be minimal at best as a temporary span will be installed prior to the current bridge’s closing. Any traffic impact, he said, would likely come during the paving of tie-ins for the temporary bridge and then when turning traffic over to it. Even so, he emphasized they would be minimal.

The exact time for work to begin is not yet known.

“The contractor has stated that they we probably not start until after the first of 2025 but could be sooner if schedule allows,” said Nelson. “The completion date is currently Sept. 26, 2025.”

Nelson added the project is fairly straightforward. He said the WVDOH is replacing a worn-out structure.
