Pair of Renovation Projects to National Businesses at Meadowbrook Mall to Easily Exceed $1M Price Tag

By Jeff Toquinto on February 08, 2024

The arrival of Boscov’s at Meadowbrook Mall has triggered plenty of economic development news in the 40-plus-year-old facility. And that good news continued Wednesday morning.

During a meeting of the Bridgeport Development Authority in City Council Chambers, BDA member and Meadowbrook Mall Property Manager Robin Urquhart talked about projects taking place at the facility. And she mentioned a pair of big ones.

Two national chains, American Eagle and Buckle apparently are doing good business. Urquhart said American Eagle is getting ready to begin a massive renovation and that she was contacted by officials from Buckle Tuesday, Feb. 6, about an upcoming renovation.

“These renovations cement the fact that they’re not going anywhere,” said Urquhart. “Boscov’s has just pushed everything forward for confidence from our stores and the public. These are more signs that we’re here to stay.”

It also pumps a hefty amount of money into Bridgeport and local economy. The renovations will exceed $1 million.

“Buckle is just in the beginning with the contact, but it’s going to be significant from what the leasing agent is telling us,” Urquhart, who has been at the mall for 20 years, including the last three as property manager, said. “American Eagle is much further along … American Eagle will be more than $1 million. I do not know, yet, with Buckle what they’re looking at investing.”

These projects are in the middle of a massive swing of activity at the mall. Last month, national chain Tradehome Shoes announced its arrival. CP Gifts is relocating to the old Finish Line site to open up space, along with GNC moving to the former Yankee Candle shop, to allow for Shoe Department Encore to do another major expansion. Verizon also took over the former U.S. Cellular location. Cardinal Market’s location, which will be filled by Tradehome Shoes, is going into the former Motherhood location beside the Hallmark store.

“I’ve never seen this much activity,” said Urquhart, who spent her first 17 years at the mall as the marketing director.

Read more from this meeting, including additional information on other mall activities, in the days ahead on Connect-Bridgeport.
