WVU Getting $6.4 Million from USDOT for Upgrades to University's Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) System

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on June 30, 2024

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV), member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $6,400,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for improvements to West Virginia University’s (WVU) Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system. The funding will upgrade the Beechurst, Walnut, Health Sciences Center, Engineering, and Towers stations. This federal award is a Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) request Senator Manchin secured on behalf of West Virginia through the Fiscal Year 2024 funding bill.

“I’m pleased the DOT is investing more than $6.4 million into West Virginia University’s PRT stations for essential improvements,” said Senator Manchin. “Safe and reliable transportation is essential to getting people where they need to go and connecting the WVU community. I look forward to seeing how it improves the lives of students, faculty and Morgantown residents, and as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue working with federal, state and local officials to expand our transit system for West Virginians.”

The Senate Appropriations Committee allows members of Congress to submit CDS requests, which provides an opportunity for state and local governments, non-profits, and other public entities to receive targeted funding for projects that bolster their communities and directly support West Virginians. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Manchin works to ensure taxpayer dollars are allocated to priorities that benefit all West Virginians, boost economic growth and support the needs of communities across the Mountain State while remaining fiscally responsible.
