Bridgeport Middle School Football Coach Robbie Buffington envisions today’s flex day practice may be a preview the holiday shopping season.
The biggest hurdle in the renovation project for the Braves’ locker room has been cleared with the installation of the lockers.
“I think I’m going to hold them all back so they can all see them for the first time together,” Buffington said. “Once the sides were up they could start getting an idea and they started calling their spots. It’s going to be like Black Friday shopping when I open the door, the kids are going to come flying in here claiming them.”
The lockers were installed in roughly three hours on Friday morning immediately transforming the portion of the oldest building at the Wayne Jamison Field complex into one that looks like it is brand new.
More has been done than just putting in new lockers. There is a new ceiling, fresh paint jobs new stickers and decals, a new coaches office and a new storage area are just some of the upgrades.
And there is still work to be done. A TV dropped down from the ceiling will be installed in the locker room and a ductless HVAC system are examples of things still in the works.
The lockers however were the centerpiece behind the project that Buffington started in the spring.
“We knew it was going to be nice,” he said. “I feel really good about it. It’s thrilling. The big decision I had was royal blue or baby blue for the trim and I went with baby blue.
“The only uneasiness is we are still about $6,000 short of where we need to be financially.
“The community support has been great and I’m confident it will get done.”
The whole project has been funded by donations and Buffington said anyone interest in making one can still do so by contacting him at 304-641-6687 or Bridgeport Middle School at 304-326-7142.
The Braves will use their remaining flex days this week before official fall practice begins on Monday, Aug. 12.
