STRONG IDEA: Plan Some Holiday Magic

By Emily Stapleton on October 22, 2013 from Strong Ideas

Step into any retail establishment and you’ll be reminded that the holiday season is upon us.  Halloween is right around the corner, then blink and you’ll be eating turkey and waking to see what Santa brought.  As kids, we used to just live in the moment and enjoy the holiday magic.  As grown-ups, we have to make plans in order for the magic to happen.

I’m not here to help you with your shopping and cooking; I’m here to encourage you to plan a holiday themed walk or run into your season.  I know what you’re thinking…you don’t have time.  I beg to differ.  It’s your holiday season; you set the priorities for you and your family.

Your holiday run or walk can take several forms.  You can register for and participate in a local 5K or 10K.  Here are a few coming up in our area:

·         The Trick or Trot 5K, Oct. 26, The Benedum Civic Center in Bridgeport
·         The Shinnston Turkey Trot, Thanksgiving Morning, Shinnston Rail Trail
·         The Jingle Bell Jog, Dec. 8, The Benedum Civic Center in Bridgeport

If you don’t live in the Bridgeport area, or will be traveling for the holidays, the magic of the internet will allow you to find local races almost anywhere.  If scheduled events don’t fit with the rest of your holiday schedule, make your own magic.  Grab the family (or head out on your own) and enjoy the great outdoors before a holiday feast.

You may still be asking yourself, why?  Why do I want to plan to run or walk during my busy holiday season?  What good will it do?  I will only be eating, shopping, etc. the rest of the season.  Here are my top 10 reasons to make a run or walk part of your holiday magic.

1.    It’s a good break from the rest of the holiday hustle and bustle.
2.    You’re going to eat anyway, why not try to offset at least a few of those extra calories.
3.    Knowing that you have a race coming up, will keep you on track with your ongoing fitness goals.
4.    Most events raise money for a local charity so it’s a great way to give back during the season.
5.    Holiday races are usually non-competitive.  You don’t have to be a runner to be a part.
6.    It’s a great way to spend time together as a family.
7.    It’s a great way to spend time together as a community.
8.    Participating in a planned event will get you out into the great outdoors…even if the weather is not ideal.
9.    It’s a great way to set an example for your children.
10.You’ll have a blast!

So, start planning your run or walk today.  Click on one of the above links or search for a race near you.  Happy Holidays…I hope yours are magical.

Until Next Week,
Emily Stapleton
