It has been a long winter. It seems the cold temperatures and snowy conditions were on a repeat pattern for too long. I don’t know about you, but from November through February, I usually get in nesting mode - making our space comfortable and cozy, a retreat from the blustery cold. And though
I try to avoid it, I always find myself getting a little down come about January. Although I get outside some - playing with the grandkids and the dogs or taking an occasional walk - I spend most of my time indoors and my surroundings seem to close in on me a little. I’ve even found myself talking to my goldfish and my plants – well, a little more than usual.
Then the warm temperatures and sunshine start teasing us a little; making an appearance just long enough to get us excited, then giving way to more cold weather. But now, my friends, I think we are on the upside. This week’s warm temperatures and blasts of sunshine have made me feel happy and with a little extra spring in my step. Flowers are pushing up through the earth, anxious to show their bright vivid hues. And the first of those flowers – some crocuses and daffodils – are already donning their perfect petals.
Neighbors are outside talking to one another. Kids are on the go; riding bikes and scooters; playing ball. Dog walkers are out in full force and the tennis, basketball and pickle ball courts are being put to good use. Playgrounds and parks are full. We’re starting to talk about spring and summer activities – from the City of Bridgeport Easter Egg Hunt to the ABB Summer Kick-Off and seasonal opening of Bridgeport Farmers Market, supported by the city and United Hospital Center. Before you know it, Parks and Recreation will be sharing information about this year’s city pool season.
Deegan Lake has fared well from the heavy snow, looking like its old self. The full water banks are such a welcome site. I can’t wait to get my kayak out there and I’m sure many others are looking forward to that, as well as fishing, biking, trail walking, and picnicking.
As the seasons are leading us into a positive pivot, I have noticed a similar trend with people; especially on social media. The weeks of negativity and political finger pointing were also dragging me down. But we are starting to see a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel; well, maybe not the end, but a narrowing of the tunnel. We cannot accomplish anything if we don’t stand together – as a community and as a country. I hope to see more positive posts, words, gestures and acts of kindness.
And that is a perfect segue into introducing Connect-Bridgeport’s newest blogger, Leigha Randolph. Leigha and I have worked on community boards together and often turn up at the same events. She’s a school counselor at both Bridgeport Middle and Bridgeport High schools. She’s an avid runner and supporter of the Hotsinpiller Fallen Stars 5K. She is also full of life and has a positive outlook which she loves to share. Leigha has created a blog called “Love and Light,” and it contains just that. Check out her first blog post on Connect-Bridgeport HERE and visit her blog site HERE. Look for a new Love and Light blog Wednesdays at 9 a.m.
