For the first time in school history, Bridgeport High School captured the Big 10 Conference wrestling championship. The event took place Saturday at Elkins High School.
The Indians saw eight wrestlers walk away as conference champions in their respective weight classes. Those titles helped Bridgeport accumulate 251 points to outdistance runner-up Lincoln, who finished with 150 points.
Bridgeport saw the following wrestlers win titles: Evan Root (106), Max Smith (113), TJ Bearden (120), Tyler Mason (138), Kaleb Ice (150), Maddox Pudder (157), John Knight (165), and Eli Knight (215)
The effort by the athletes was reflected in an honor won by Coach Chris Courtney. He was chosen by his peers as the Big 10 Conference Coach of the Year.
Bridgeport returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 21, as the postseason begins. The Tribe will be in regional competition at Wheeling Park High School starting at 10 a.m.
