It's Happening: Glamming it Up for a 1920s Look

By Julie Perine on February 02, 2023 from It’s Happening

The UHC “Roaring 20s” Holly Ball is just a few days away. For attendees wanting to glam it up to reflect the era, hair and makeup artists share some tips.

“Finger waves were probably the most popular hairstyle in the ‘20s along with pin curl sets,” said Ashley Kelly, hairstylist with Tease Salon and Boutique. “Both of these styles require you to actually use your fingers! You create the wave pattern with your fingers and a comb, and with the pin curls you use your fingers to roll your hair into a curl and pin it.”

The looks may be difficult to achieve, but if done correctly are very elegant and beautiful, Kelly said.

Hairstylist and Expressions Hair Designs Owner Judy Bonamico said an option for those with long hair is a 20s-style updo – a chignon, generally achieved by pinning the hair into a knot at the nape of the neck or back of the head.

Those who happen to have their hair cut in a classic bob with blunt-cut fringy bangs, are good to go as the look is a classic 1920s style. No bangs? Just pull hair back to the side with a bobby pin, Bonamico said.

Katelyn Hollar - former Miss West Virginia World America – has some suggestions for recreating a perfect 1920s look, starting with a ‘glowy,’ flawless base.

“Eye makeup can go in two directions – a bold smoky eye or a very glam and elegant neutral eye with bold winged liner,” she said. “A bold overdrawn dark lip is usually added to complete the look.”

Hollar said the look can be created with a natural shadow palette – black eye shadow or a color to match your eyes being smudged upward into the lash line, applying mascara and a favorite liquid liner on top lid and top lashes only. An arched thin brow, rosy blush applied to the apple of the cheeks, and red or plum lip color are ideal for the look.

“An overdrawn lip was all the rage – much like the current trend you see now in today’s makeup looks,” she said.
