It's Happening: Local Attraction Series #8: Edge of Town Farm Market and Corn Maze

By Julie Perine on September 03, 2023 from It’s Happening

Just on the edge of Bridgeport is an attraction appropriately named Edge of Town Farm Market. Open annually in May, the market features seasonal produce, potted plants and flowers, and other farm-raised products including grass-fed beef. Local eggs, honey, berries, and baked goods from The Bryant Family Farm are just a few of the other items available at the market. Recently, a variety of Amish furniture was added to the mix.

But coming up Sept. 15 is the anticipated opening of the Edge of Town Farm Market corn maze. Daily, a hayride will be available to transport visitors from the market to the nearby maze. It’s the third year for the maze, which offers plenty of challenges.

“The corn maze grew faster than we thought it would. It’s bigger this year – clear across the other side of the creek. There’s are two little bridges you cross to get you to the back of the maze,” Poth said. “It’s definitely a harder maze than ever.”

New this year are games, like a maze game board and duck race, and on weekends, an ice cream truck will be parked near the corn maze.

Corn maze hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 10-10 Friday, 10-midnight Saturday, and 12-6 Sunday. Fridays are glow in the dark nights, but the experience is not scary. Saturday nights, however, are for those who delight in a seasonal thrill. The price is $10 per person.

Visitors can stop at the pumpkin patch and pick out their favorite for purchase. It was a challenging year for growing pumpkins, so different measures had to be taken.

“We usually plant the pumpkins in the field by the first week of June but because it was so dry, we planted them in cups and when it had finally rained enough, we put them in the field and they did well,” he said.

As always, there are a variety of pumpkins, from Jack-O-Lanterns and fairy tale pumpkins to large polar bear varieties. Included is the iron head pumpkin which has thick skin and holds up nice over time.

Haybales, cornstalks, mums, apples, peppers, and other specialties will also be available. This year's vendors include Marcia Cokely baskets, Sweet Bryan Farm sweets, Heavenly Farm eggs and Katie McDaniels house plants and dog treats. The market kitchen will also be open, serving everything from fried green tomato sandwiches, BLTs, wraps, hotdogs, to apple dumplings.

Along with family and friends, I was able to experience the hayride, corn maze and pumpkin-picking experience in 2022. Everyone had a great time. The little ones were game for a second stroll through the maze, and they picked out pumpkins that their little hands couldn’t carry. So, they rolled those pumpkins to the check-out!

The corn maze is also available for private bookings for classrooms and clubs. Call 304-669-0569 for more information.

The Edge of Town Farm Market is located at 1165 Anmoore Road next to U Haul.
