Movie Review with Jeff McCullough: The Biggest Blockbusters of Summer 2015 (July Through August)

Part two of my coverage on the summer’s biggest flicks, July and August provide even more reasons to never leave the theater, with a smattering of sequels, r-imaginings, and even an original film or two vying for your attention.
Terminator: Genisys (July 1) Asides from the bizarre spelling and decidedly so-so cast (Daenerys’s from Game of Thrones as Sarah Connor? Really?) Genisys looks to be a fun reimaging of the original flick. We even get to see senior citizen Arnold Schwarzenegger huffing and puffing as his role in the first Terminator, the big bad android model T-800.
Magic Mike XXL (July 1) By far my favorite title of this summer’s upcoming films, Magic Mike XXL, sequel to that Channing Tatum movie your girlfriend dragged you to in 2012, yearns to reach the heights of the surprisingly successful original. Expect many shots of perfect abs and sweat-glazed men.
Minions (July 10) Spinoff of the uber-popular animated Despicable Me films, Minions stars the titular little yellow monsters and their quest to find a new leader. Given the minions inability to speak, beyond gibberish and the word Banana, this should handily win the title of most annoying movie of the summer.
Ant-Man (July 17) Yet another Marvel film, this one starring Paul Rudd, Ant-Man has a long history of directors jumping shark and worried producers just hoping to get a finished project. Well, finished it is, but we’ll have to wait and see if Ant-Man can power past its troubled history and deliver a strong film.
Trainwreck (July 17) A little more underground than most of the films on this list, you should still be excited for Trainwreck. Starring and written by one of my favorite comedians Amy Schumer, and directed by Judd Apatow, it’s been receiving acclaim from those who have seen early prints and looks to be a sleeper hit in an already packed summer.
Pixels (July 24) A comedy about when giant Pac-Man’s and Donkey Kong’s going rouge and laying waste to Earth, featuring stars Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad, Pixel’s seems promising if it weren’t for one fact. The third star is Adam Sandler. Still, if Sandler can get his act together, Pixels looks to be a fun time.
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (July 31) The fifth entry in everyone’s third favorite spy franchise, and follow-up to 2011’s excellent 
Ghost Protocol, the trailer for Rouge Nation features everything you’d expect from Mission Impossible at this point- shirtless Tom Cruise, crazy stunts, and lots and lots of running. If its prequels are anything to standby, it should be a good time.

The Fantastic Four (August 7th) Yet another Marvel movie, all we’ve seen this one is one of the most generic trailers I’ve seen in years. If you’re not burned out on superheroes by now, this might do the trick.
Straight Outta Compton (August 14th) Telling the origins of N.W.A and its pioneering effect on the rap scene, Straight Outta Compton looks to show how the group rose from the poverty of the hood to worldwide success. Think Walk the Line with more gangs.
Sinister 2 (August 21) A horror sequel to the decidedly mediocre 2012 original, Sinister 2 stars Mr. Boogey the child kidnapped alongside a sizable list of actors you’ve never heard of. If we stop going to these films maybe they’ll stop making them. Just saying.
Hitman: Agent 47 (August 28) A reboot of a franchise everyone’s more or less forgot about, Agent 47 stars the titular bald assassin and his quest to rescue some guy’s daughter or something. An impressively macho trailer and a big budget do little to distinguish this sheep from the flock. Stranger things have happened though, and Hitman might end up a surprise hit.
And that’s the last of the biggest films releasing this summer. It’s obviously a packed year, and those without ample time and pocket money will have to choose wisely.
